Advantages and disadvantages of the Internet
In the modern world, the Internet has come into our life. Lots of students use the Internet as a tool for their studies. They look up the meanings of new words and learn history or geography on the Internet. They also use the Internet to read news or send e-mails.
But every coin has two sides. Some students spend too much time playing online games and chatting with friends. They are not interested in their studies. At the same time, they become weaker and weaker in body.
In a word, the Internet brings us not only a lot of convenience but also troubles. As students, we should make good use of the Internet.

In our kitchen, there was a wooden table and three chairs—one for Dad, one for Mom, and one for me. In the cellar (地窖), the very last jar of apple jam lay quietly on the shelf, waiting to be turned into an apple pie when Dad came back. Mom sat at one end of the table. I sat in the middle between her and Dad. I tried not to look at Dads empty place. Dad had gone to the city to look for work for a long time.
Every night, I lay awake in bed and waited for the train to stop. I waited to hear the creaky (嘎吱作響的) gate Dad was going to fix when he came home. I waited to hear the sound of his work boots dropping on the step by the kitchen door, and his voice calling, “I’m home!”
Every night, as I lay there, I stared at the window and the curtains Mom made from empty flour sacks (麻布袋).
Every night, Mom came to kiss me goodnight—after the train had gone by. She had been listening, too. “Go to sleep. Your dad will be home soon. Maybe for Thanksgiving.”
Time dragging by, it finally came the day before Thanksgiving. I went to sleep with the sound of train wheels in my head, whispering, “Maybe tomorrow, maybe tomorrow.”

Many parents worry that their children’s use of electronic devices will bring harm to their children, so they set strict limits on their use of electronic devices. But there’s another device-related danger that parents may be completely ignoring—second-hand screen time. With second-hand screen time, kids are indirectly exposed to screens being used by someone else close to them.
Watching parents use their devices a lot from an early age can lead children to become addicted to them as they grow up, research suggests. Also, children are likely to show more acting-out behaviors when parents spend too much time on their devices. Often, this is the only way kids can get a parent’s attention. Spending too much time on electronic devices, especially in the presence of a child, also sends the message that the device is more important than the child. This can lead to a breakdown in the parent-child relationship.
This does not mean that parents should not use electronic devices while their children are present. It does mean that parents need to set limits on their own screen time, just as they would for their children. For adults, devices are often a necessary part of their work, as well as personal tasks and activities. While cutting down on their screen time may not be easy, it is worth the effort.
